Improve Your Brushing and Flossing with These Tips

All of us brush and floss regularly to maintain good oral health. But in order to get the best results, you need to brush and floss the right way. The dental team at Kids First Dental in Martinsville recommends brushing twice a day and using fluoride toothpaste.

If you’ve eaten sugary foods or high-carbohydrate meals, consider adding extra brushing sessions.

Remember to replace your toothbrush every three months, and the size and shape of the toothbrush should be such that you’re able to reach all areas of your mouth easily.

Dos and Don’ts of Proper Brushing

  • Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and dedicate equal time to brushing all four parts of the mouth: The upper right and left teeth as well as the lower right and left teeth.
  • Brush using a back and forth movement along the width of each tooth.
  • Remember to thoroughly brush the outer and inner surfaces as well as the chewing surfaces of your teeth.
  • Hold the brush vertically and brush with an up-and-down motion to clean between teeth.

Don’t use hard-bristled brushes as far as possible as they are harsh on tooth enamel. In addition to using a regular toothbrush, you can also use an interdental toothbrush for cleaning debris between teeth.

Flossing Tips from Kids First Dental

  • Floss at least once a day. Twist about 18 inches of floss thread and maneuver the floss in an up-and-down movement on the side of teeth.
  • The ADA suggests that you can floss before or after brushing: Either option works well.
  • Gently curve the floss into a curved shape and move upwards away from the gumline.
  • You may experience some slight soreness initially, but in 5 to 6 days’ time, you’ll get used to it.
